How to establish VPN connection from Ubuntu to Vigor Router via L2TP over IPsec

Virtual Private Network (VPN) lets users access the private network remotely. This note demonstrates how to set up Vigor Router as a L2TP over IPsec VPN server for Ubuntu(16.04), and how to establish a L2TP over IPsec VPN from Ubuntu to the private network of Vigor Router.

Vigor Router settings

1. Go to VPN and Remote Access >> Remote Dial-In User, and click an available index

2. Enable this account and enter username/password, make sure you have enabled L2TP with IPsec Policy with "Must" in Allowed Dial-in Type.

3. Go to VPN and Remote Access>>IPsec General Setup and enter General Pre-Shared Key for L2TP over IPsec VPN

Ubuntu Settings

1. Open terminal to install L2TP over IPsec on network manager by following commands

 

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get update    

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get upgrade    

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nm-l2tp/network-manager-l2tp

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nm-l2tp/network-manager-l2tp    

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get update    

sudo apt-get install network-manager-l2tp network-manager-l2tp-gnome

sudo apt-get install network-manager-l2tp network-manager-l2tp-gnome    

2. Open System Settings >> Network and Click '+' to create a new VPN interface

3. Select L2TP as VPN connection type

4. Enter Gateway, which is VPN server IP or domain, and username/password created on Vigor router.

5. Click IPsec Settings and enter Pre-shared key for IPsec

6. Switch on the VPN connection

Switch on the VPN connection    


We can check VPN status on VPN and Remote Access >> Connection Management after VPN is successfully connected.
